On Translating The Fuzzy Language Of Yu Dan Confucius From The Heart

Fuzziness extensively exists in human language and cognition.With the rapid development of fuzzy language study at home since the 1980s,studies about the translation of the fuzzy language appear.Yu Dan Confucius from the Heart is a successful case of the "Going Global" of the Chinese book,published by Zhonghua Book Company.The English version was an immediate hit among English readers.However,there are few studies about fuzzy language translation over this version.Therefore,the thesis attempts to analyze the fuzzy language translation of Yu Dan Confucius from the Heart,and interpret the exquisite expression of this bestseller.With 29 typical cases of fuzzy language from the source text,the thesis discusses language fuzziness from the linguistic,cultural and rhetorical angles with three chapters and come up with the strategies of translating fuzzy words.Fuzzy language translation of Yu Dan Confucius from the Heart can be discussed from the following three aspects:semantic fuzziness and pragmatic fuzziness in linguis-tic aspect,fuzziness of cultural background and implication in cultural aspect,fuzziness of rhetorical implication and methods in rhetorical aspect.The thesis explores translator's inclination in the process of translating the fuzzy language from a macroscopic view.The most commonly used ways for translators include:limpid translation for fuzziness and fuzzy translation for translation,and the latter way can be subdivided into ways of more fuzzy translation for less fuzziness,and less fuzzy translation for more fuzziness.In the microscopic view,ways of ' literal translation plus explanation","free translation","conversion" and "free translation plus explanation "are used by most translators in the linguistic level;means of "omitting","free translation","amplification and transliteration plus explanation" in the cultural level;and methods of"naturalization" and" alienation”are employed by translators in specific circumstances,or methods of "conversion","am-plification"and "omitting" are used appropriately.The above translation methods employ ed are based on the "principle of fuzziness".Based on above analysis,the thesis attempts to apply theories of semantics,pragmatics,intercultural communication and rhetoric to fuzzy language translation for translation strategies in the translation of the fuzzy language.Hopefully thesis will provide helpful suggestion for the going-global strategy of the Chinese books.
