As the utmost brilliant achievement of Chinese literature, Classical Chinese poetry plays an irreplaceable role not only to China but also to the whole world. Classical Chinese poetry, which is composed of reserved language and meaningful images, could provides readers with a vast imaginary space, however, great difficulties for translators.Generally speaking, traditional Chinese poetry is characterized by their suggestiveness, implicitness and simplicity, which manifest a kind of fuzziness, and then through readers'aesthetic experience in the act of reading it becomes fuzzy beauty. The existence of fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry has long been recognized by people. However, there was no systematical and theoretical guide of this recognition until the end of last century. It is fuzzy aesthetics that provides a new horizon for the translation of classical Chinese poetry. This dissertation takes fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry as subject and fuzzy aesthetics as theoretical basis. It aims at using the aesthetic principle of transferring fuzzy beauty in the translation of classical Chinese poetry and this principle is tested through case study. The whole thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction to this dissertation and it introduces the background, significance, purpose and organization of this dissertation. Classical Chinese poetry is so glorious and brilliant that we have the responsibility to transfer them into foreign languages, especially English to make whole world know our country and its splendid cultures. Chapter Two presents a literature review of translation of classical Chinese poetry, including the difficulties in translation of classical Chinese poetry, some scholars'view on poetry translation and a general overview of aesthetics and its influence on translation of classical Chinese poetry. Based on this literature review, fuzzy aesthetics, the theoretical basis, and its application will be introduced. Chapter Three makes a general survey on language fuzziness and fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry. This chapter gives a detailed analysis of the definitions of language fuzziness and fuzzy beauty, aesthetic value of language fuzziness, three characteristics of fuzzy beauty (uncertainty, totality and Inter-Permeability) and its manifestation in classical Chinese poetry(fuzzy beauty in form and fuzzy beauty in content). Based on the above analysis, Chapter Four ventures to put forward a principle and three strategies of transferring fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poems. The translation of classical Chinese poetry, in fact, is the process of transferring the original spirit and beauty into the Target Language. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the whole thesis. Through the above analysis and study, this thesis reaches an immature conclusion, including major findings, limitations and suggestions. In many cases, the complete transference of fuzzy beauty of the original poems is impossible, however, it is hoped that this dissertation will contribute to providing an artistic re-creation space for the translation of classical Chinese poetry and the study on fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry could draw the attention of more researchers.
