Depression of human beings is a very complicated feeling; one of all reasons is that it is intrinsic and subjective. Overt depression can be observed by the conventional methods easily, but individuals'intrinsic depression was unavoidably neglected. Various defensive verbalizations can be avoided by The Rorschach test while measuring intrinsic depression. From 1970s a comprehensive system in Rorschach test has been set up by Exner. Then depression index was used to assess depression. In order to promote the use of depression index, both psychological test and questionnaires are used to this study to test the reliability and validity of this depression index for Chinese.The results of this study indicated that (1)Rorschach depression index tested in this study is acceptable(above 0.7); (2) depression index can be used to distinguish depression and normals obviously, so it is effective to measure individuals'intrinsic depression; (3) These result support the use of the Rorschach depression index in the assessment of depression as well as contributing to a better conceptual understanding of depression.
