Exploration Of Hybridity In Translation From The Perspective Of Defamiliarization-With Special Refference To Six Chapters Of A Floaing Life

Historically, scholars held heated discussions over the dichotomy of domestication and foreignization. However, the findings of the present study claim that all translation texts are apparent with the character of hybridity, resulting from a compromise between domestication and foreignization. Previous researches on hybridity in translation have produced influential enlightenment, but they are still unsystematic and lack theoretical support. In view of this situation, the author bases the present study on the defamiliarization theory, from which he finds theoretical support for the study of hybridity in translation. In other words, he endeavors to defend the adoption of hybridity as a translation strategy in the light of Victor Shklovsky notion of"defamiliarization".Literary translation aims to aid target readers to appreciate the exotic features of other cultures and make them familiarize with the traits of the cultural other and stand a positive and correct side toward the differences. By defamiliarizing the original, hybridity can serve as a peculiar tool so that target readers can be motivated to comprehend and accept the alien cultural characteristics and thus the aesthetic expectation different from that of the native culture can be achieved. Eventually the value of literary translation can be materialized when the equal communication between different cultures is promoted.However, the degree of the manipulation of hybridity should also be investigated, for the essential requirement of translation is to facilitate the dialogue between different cultures. After giving an account and some analysis of defamiliarization, the author compares hybridity with Shklovsky's defamiliarization, arguing that despite the obvious distinctions between them, there is still a close connection between them.With the purpose to testify that all translations are hybridity texts, the author chooses Six Chapters of a Floating Life by Lin Yutang as the data for analysis. Through the examination of Six Chapters of a Floating Life, the author concludes that it is a foreignization-oriented hybridity text, where defamiliarization manifests the extraordinary charm through its hybridity. In terms of structure, this examination corresponds to the discussion of how defamiliarization can justify hybridity as a theoretical foundation.
