Cultural Hybridity In Lin Yutang's Translation Of Fu Sheng Liu Ji

When translating Chinese classics into English,the translator is faced with one issue,how he can help the target reader experience the original culture-loaded words and expressions of source text.Lin Yutang's English version of Fu Sheng Liu Ji,namely Six Chapters of a Floating Life displays Lin's outstanding competence in translating culture-loaded words and expressions,from which we are destined to learn some translating skills.By analyzing the papers and theses on Six Chapters of a Floating Life,Chapter One points out and summarizes the related heated researches and their limitations,the innovations and structures of this paper as well.By introducing hybridity and cultural hybridity,Chapter Two analyses the relationship between language and culture and their translating strategies,domestication and foreignization.Through probing into the cultural hybridity in Lin's translation,Chapter Three Four explores some hybridity cases in Lin's translation,mainly out of the angles of forms of address,place names,units of measurement and social culture.After a careful discussion on the hybridity cases,this thesis offers another translation version with foreignizing translation strategy,aiming to pass the original culture-loaded words and expressions to the target reader.With an analysis on the dominant hibridity factors consisting of Lin's family&education background,and their influences on his translation conception and strategy,and target readers.Chapter Four points out cultural hybridity is an inevitable outcome.By analyzing some some hybridity cases in Lin's translation,Chapter Five concludes that translating strategies,domestication and foreignization plays a dominant role in the degree of cultural hybridity.When translating Chinese classics into English,the translator should balance the degree of cultural hybridity.Finally,this thesis points out the main achievements,and problems as well which are worth further study in the near future.
