As the theory and practice of language teaching enters a new century, the importance of helping students become more autonomous in their learning has become one of its more prominent themes. Autonomy is a precondition for effective learning; when learners succeed in developing autonomy, they not only become better language learners but they also develop into more responsible and critical members of the communities in which they live. The internet is becoming one necessity to a lot of people. Because of the vast information and convenient communication tools, the opportunities and places to do autonomous learning have been largely expanded. But one thing we have to bear in mind is that self-directed learning does not clearly and necessarily lead to autonomy improvement. So the instructional designers and teachers should design and develop teaching materials, guiding tools and activities to cultivate the autonomy. There are five sections in this dissertation:Firstly, the introduction, including why I am writing this paper, the background, current research situation, research significance, research methods and the outcome.Secondly, relevant concepts of autonomy, including the clarification of the difference between autonomy and self-regulated learning, the factors and paths of fostering autonomy and how to evaluate autonomy.Thirdly, how to cultivate the autonomy. Based on the research on autonomy of college students, this chapter made a summary on the correct understanding of learning strategies training, how to make choices among learning strategies, four approaches of learning strategies training.Fourthly, the brochure helps students learn and the learning guidance designing. The brochure is based on theories of proximal self-motivation, metacognition, goal setting and plan making. The goals are to make the students have a correct understanding of web-based learning and language learning, also through examples to let them have a clear idea of how to retain their passion for learning and control the learning process. And the learning guidance is to introduce the specific tactics of English learning and to help students solve problems on English speaking and listening. Finally, summary of how to foster autonomy, limitations of the research , causes analysis, and my expectation.
