Current society has higher requirements for students' English competence and performance, especially for the practical use. Higher technical and vocational education (hereafter HTVE) aims to cultivate application-oriented qualified personnel for our society and the guidelines of HTVE are "focusing on the practical use, learning the most frequently-used knowledge, and aiming at language application". But at present, in some HTVE schools, students still take the role as listeners and seldom get the chances to be involved in the process of class interaction, and some interaction in class is unsuccessful, which results in ineffective or low effective learning. This thesis aims to investigate barriers in HTVE classroom interaction to explore strategies can be used to set up successful classroom interaction, get better learning effects, and raise students' practical English abilities.Constructivism, the input hypothesis, the output hypothesis, interaction hypothesis and social interactionism are applied as theoretical framework of the thesis. Both the pilot and main study have been done in HTVE to investigate classroom interaction barriers and the reasons. In order to overcome the main barriers concluded from the results of the research, which are HTVE students' English foundation, learning motivation, confidence and class size, this thesis has raised a series of useful strategies to set up successful English classroom interaction, such as methods of spurring students' learning motivation and initiative, effective preparations before interaction, improvement of strategies of English classroom questions, successful control of groupwork, design of practical and useful class activities, students' automaticity that needs to be cared in classroom interaction, ways of setting up students' confidence in English learning, the language used in class, etc. Based on these strategies, roles of interactive teachers and students in HTVE are put forward. In the end of the thesis, suggestions are made to improve the interaction in HTVE English classroom.
