Hu Hong was one of the most distinguished neo-Confucians during the last period of Northern Song Dynasty and the early Southern Song Dynasty, as well as an important founder of Huxiang School. For a long time, his philosophy thought of Hu Hong has been the focus of the academic research on him has been stressed to, while other aspects little involved. This article makes an attempt to probe into his thought of historical science, excavating his thought of historical science from the social background he lived in. Then we can realize his though of historical science and make a fair reasonable appraisal. The paper consists of four sections as follows.Section I: Introduce Hu Hong's life and his academic origins. Through inspecting his historical environment and family study experience, we can probe into the root of his academic science.Section II: Discuss Hu Hong's thought of historical science from the level of historical philosophy, the method of the history writings compiling, the Confucian and theory historical science, and evaluation of historical figures, etc.Section III: Demonstrate Hu Hong's status and influence in the field of the historical science. Reveal his pioneering role in the Confucian and theory historical science in Southern Song Dynasty, and the influence of his thought of historical science on some famous philosopher, such as Zhu Xi, Lv Zuqian, Huang Zhen, etcSection IV: Conclusion. Summarize the article and induct the development course of historical science of Song Dynasty.
