When the computer processes English sentences, the processing of clause is a very important aspect. But there are many types of clauses in English sentences and, furthermore, there are different forms in each type of clause. The connectives which introduce the clauses are not always used in the same way and they take ambiguities. But the reserches of clauses and connectives today are not enough to meet the need of processing of English sentence. In order that the computers can process the clauses in English, this thesis tries to make a thorough study of each of the connectives which introduce the clauses. In this thesis, three basic means in natureal language processing are adopted: means of regulation, means of statistics and means of questionaire. This thesis, firstly, serches a large number of sentences in the language material pool and sums up the sentence structures which often appear. Secondly, with grammatical rules, we clear up the ambiguities in the sentences which take ambiguous structures. Thirdly, if we cannot clear up the ambiguities with all the grammatical rules we can adopt in the ambiguious structures taking the verbs of delivering information, we pick up all the relative sentences in the language material pool and after judging the use of each of the connectives, we made a statistical test to find out the ragulations to clear up the ambiguities by the use of words. Lastly, if we cannot collect statistics of some the structures because of the lack of the sentences in the language material pool, we make some questionnairs in accordance with the characteristics of these structures, and thus we can clear up the ambiguities with the results of the questionnairs. On this basis, we find some regulations which can be used to clear up the ambiguities. In addition, all the research works in this thesis are demonstrative researches, and all the ambiguous structures and non-ambiguous structures are supported by illustrative sentences.
