Along with the Chinese national rejuvenation, as traditional values absorb those beneficial aspects of foreign culture, a unified aesthetic standard must come into being featured in time and nation. But while we drink in foreign influence, we must keep our own tradition in itself. Chen Hongshou, a very important figure artist in Chinese art history, is famous for his figure painting, which is unique and classic. Inherited from that of Tang and Song dynasty and combined with painting style of Yuan and Ming, his brush work has deep influence on that time and later. Both his aesthetics theory and his expression style are representative of Chinese traditional figure painting. Started from model of his figure painting, this paper is to analysis Chinese traditional art and to understand Chinese classic aesthetics, and then to gain some inspirations for development and exploitation. Owing to integration with calligraphy, as well as rising of literate painting at the end of Northern Song dynasty, traditional Chinese painting is changed from objective reproduce to subjective expression. Chen Hongshou'figure painting is good at adapting limited image to bring out imaginations and achieve realm of'limited words while infinite significance'. Lines of his figure painting own great momentum as if it will fly far away with wind. The painting attaches importance to shape and meaning of lines, and coordinates internal and external style, which causes its character of plane. His painting disobeys'Three definite rules', which is definite time, definite space, and definite scenario. So its picture breaks restrict of time and space, and spectators enjoy the painting as wandering with the artist. The painting is particular about the features of inter promotion of void and solid, and to reveal or to hide. The painting pays attention to details. Image of Chen Hongshou'figure painting is from nature but well above nature. With exaggerated model, unique style, elegant flavor, vigorous and varied lines, his figure painting is decorative with unsophisticated beauty. Chen Hongshou portrait's excelling at with parallelism nature's line, may say that has formed the program, turned the mark, has formed the solution art and the natural opposition relations ingenious language method. Grotesque, peculiar and prominent, his aesthetic taste develops a school of his own. Later generations hold his painting skill and aesthetic theory in esteem, and benefit a lot from his painting. This paper hopes to have some enlightenment effects for exploring and developing pluralistic figure painting in 21st century. In this changeable, complicated and diversified society, only to take root into our native culture, Profits from the traditional portrait master's artistic performance style, can we find creative power and way out under this circumstance, to develop and create traditional figure painting according to peculiarities of time, region and nation.
