The era of globa lization has witnessed cultural communication and collisiondeveloping into an unprecedented scope and depth. Transla tion, as an important tool,facilitates the understa nding and absorption of foreign cultures. But people's culturalappetite, at the same time, has also imposed new challenges to translation. Thetransformation of cultural ima ges is one of the most outsta nding issues for today'stranslators. Readable but dull translated works without exotic fla vor can no longer feast thereaders. They need fresh air from origina l cultural ima ges. And they are eager to enlargetheir cultural horizons. Given its importance and the difficulty in its transformation, theauthor conducts a comprehensive and in-depth research on the transformation of culturalima ges in translation for translators'reference in the future.This thesis consists of five parts. Part I is a brief introduction, which provides somebackground information of cultural ima ge studies in translation. The author viewsProfessor Xie Tia nzhen, a pioneering Chinese scholar, the staring point of such research.Part II deals with the close relationship between la nguage, culture and translation, which isthe theoretica l foundation of this study. Part III clarifies the definition of cultural ima ge andclassifies it into five different groups. Part IV is the backbone of this paper. In this part, theauthor analyzes the difficulties of cultural ima ge transformation, provides five specificmeasures for its transformation and also summa rizes a priority rule in terms of strategyapplica tion. Besides, the author urges translators to pay attention to the context of theima ge, esp. the text and the times.An idea runs through the whole thesis, i.e., translators, as a cultural ambassador,should try their best in cultural ima ge transformation and also consta ntly improves theircultural competence for better communication between different cultures.
