| The English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School (draft) issued by the Ministry of Education of China in April, 2003 has pointed out a clear direction for English teaching in senior high schools. In September, 2005, Advance with English by Yilin Press and Group of Phoenix Publication Medium replaced SEFC 2003 (Senior English for China) and has been officially used as the English material for senior schools in Jiangsu Province. The frequent shift of materials poses great pressure both on schools and teachers.This thesis is based on theories on linguistics, language learning, syllabus, material design and evaluation. Referring to Professor He Anping's Assessment of English Material in Senior High School and a questionnaire handed out to teachers by Yilin Press, the author designs two sets of questionnaires and carries out some interviews with teachers and students respectively. In this way, this thesis has a close look at Advance with English and makes an objective material evaluation. It also suggests how teachers should make use of this material and transform their role in teaching to cope with the development of materials.The evaluation of Advance with English can help teachers judge its quality and value objectively and scientifically, and in addition, offer a better understanding of it and some reference to the teaching and compiling of materials in the future. |
