There were three periods that Eileen Chang had stayed in Hong Kong during her life. The time between each period was about ten years. Concerning most of Eileen Chang's life stages—as a youth, or as a middle-aged person, the periods made a great influence on the production, development and transformation of Eileen Chang's liberalism. The study, as it is assumed, attempts to identify why Eileen Chang stayed or left Hong Kong and how the periods when Eileen Chang stayed in Hong Kong affected the development of her liberalism, since she is so important a writer in the history of modem Chinese literature and Hong Kong is so important a city for her. From 1939 to 1941 Eileen Chang stayed in Hong Kong for study. Chapter I is to analyze how Eileen Chang became a liberalist, according to her early life in Shanghai, her change in Hong Kong University and her condition when World War II broke out in Hong Kong.Chapter II is about how Eileen Chang got the reflection as a liberalist when she exiled Hong Kong from 1952 to 1955, including why she fled from the mainland of China, her life in Hong Kong as a exiled writer, and why she decided to leave from Hong Kong to USA.In October 1961, Eileen Chang returned to Hong Kong for the third time. And she had not returned to China since she left Hong Kong in March 1962. Eileen Chang insisted her position as a liberalist during this period. Chapter III is to identify her persistence as a liberalist ,according to how she lived in USA, why she returned to Hong Kong and why she left again etc.
