This thesis is a tentative and comparative study on how to transfer the cultural presupposition in different English versions of Mao Zedong's poems to the readers of target language. The author attempts to make a literature review on the cultural presupposition and clarifies the definition, characteristics of cultural presupposition, and translator's perception towards cultural presupposition and then expounds the methods of transference of cultural presupposition in detail.Cultural presupposition is a kind of thinking pattern and behavioral model which establishes itself on the basis of cultural context. It is the collective consciousness and social consensus from the accumulation of certain historical or social culture. In the process of translation, the diversity of cultural presuppositions of different cultures becomes one of the main obstacles for the cross-cultural communication. The communication among language users with different cultural backgrounds is also a course of exchanges and fusion of different cultural presuppositions. In this thesis, the first chapter focuses on the relationship between cultural presupposition and the translation of the classical Chinese poetry. The second chapter manifests the cultural presupposition in the rendition of Mao Zedong's poems on the level of form and content. The last chapter lists transference methods of cultural presupposition in the translation of Mao Zedong's poems. It comes to the following conclusion:first,in order to properly handle the problems in translation brought about by cultural presupposition, translators are required to strengthen the perception towards the cultural presupposition and make an accurate judgment about the existence of cultural presuppositions;second, translators should adopt appropriate methods in the hope to transfer the cultural presupposition in source language text to the uttermost,so as to help the target language readers remove the sense of vacuum in reading and retain semantic coherence, and at last to achieve the aim of cross-cultural communication.
