The study of shape formation is one of the basic specialized courses of art design. Since its introduction into the educational system of basic design studies of our country from Hongkong in the late 1970s, the teaching of the study of shape formation has gone through thirty years of educational practice. With the continuous deepening and development of the national reform of art designing education, the teaching of basic art designing has become more scientific, more reasonable and more advanced in art education, and the teaching of the study of shape formation has experienced years of disputes and evolvement. Nowadays, art designing education is inevitably faced with more profound reforms and changes, and the teaching of basic art designing in turn is bound to enter an age of progress and innovation. In view of the above-mentioned objective, this paper provides a relatively systematic generalization and combing of the study of shape formation, which is one of the courses in the teaching of basic art designing. From the perspective of course teaching and research, the paper analyses and elaborates in details on the origin of the study of shape formation, its functions in the teaching of basic art designing in our country, and its development and current situation in China. Meanwhile, further analysis and elucidation is made concerning the status quo and existing problems of the teaching of the course in a number of schools and institutions in the country. On the basis of a comparison made between the teaching contents, teaching methods, medium of instruction of some specific courses in traditional teaching pattern and innovative teaching pattern, the paper suggests the scientific establishment of systematic and reasonable course teaching methods and medium of instruction, under the guidance of creative pattern of art designing education and educational ideas. The paper consists of five chapters: Chapter One is an introduction, which is composed of a literature review on research in the field both at home and abroad, a writing assumption of the paper and a comment on its contribution. Chapter Two is the research on the history of development and current situation of the study of shape formation. This part expounds in details the circumstances which give birth to the study of shape formation, the historic origin and social background when the course is introduced into China and its functions in the teaching of basic art designing in secondary schools and junior colleges within China. Chapter Three is a detailed discussion of the basic components of the study of shape formation, i.e. the meaning, the concept and the principles of formation, a classified interpretation of formation, as well as the characteristics of the teaching of the study of shape formation. Chapter Four is a further research into the field of the teaching of the study of shape formation, which is also the focus of the paper. This chapter includes research and study of course teaching, objective of course teaching, manners of course teaching, creative thinking in art designing, as well as the methods and plans for cultivating such creative thinking. Chapter Five concentrates on an orientation of "teaching" and "learning" in the teaching of the study of shape formation, which includes the significance of the teaching of basic art designing, the transition of the teacher-student relationship, the changing role of the teacher and the reform in teaching methods, the changing roles of the teacher and the student, as well as the further development and future perspective of the study of shape formation. The last part is the conclusion. It is a summary and generalization of the analysis and research above. By means of the attempts at studies, this paper puts forward quite specific assumptions and motions concerning the teaching methods of the course of the study of shape formation, in the hope that such assumptions can be of referential value to the reformation of the course of basic designing education.
