Abstract/Summary:
The Predicate-Complement structure, one of the most basic type of structures in Modern Chinese, has always been an important subject in grammar. Research on this structure in the past has been reviewed and summarized, and further exploration on this issue is still needed. In this thesis, the exploration on the Predicate-Complement structure includes the following aspects:Firstly, from the aspect of Construction Grammar, this thesis holds that the Predicate-Complement structure is a unique pairing of form and meaning. The features of the structure can not be concluded from its make up. On this basis, it is argued that the meaning of the Predicate-Complement structure is accomplishment. Secondly, that the grammatical meaning of the Predicate-Complement structure is accomplishment is used to explain the relevant syntactic phenomenon in Chinese, including the grammaticalization of aspectual markers and phase complements, and numerous appearance of this structure in the"Ba"-sentences and"Bei"-sentences; Lastly, semantic characteristics of the Predicate-Complement structure are analysed with the Predication Theory, according to the Construction Grammar's view on semantics. The Predicate-Complement structure is divided into two categories, causative and non-causative, which are discussed respectively. In conclusion, this thesis tries to do some further studies on the grammatical meaning of Predicate-Complement structure, and use it to explain the relevant syntactic phenomenon in Chinese.
