This thesis is composed of four chapters. As the researches on the novles by David Lodge are not enough, it introduces the course of his novels creation in Chapter 1 specially, and also it talks about Lodge's results in the field of literary criticism in Part 2 of this chapter to get ready for interpretation of his novels with his theories which came from his practice for the research of literary criticism and thus there is a kind of intertextuality between his novels creation and his novels criticism. It gives a general review of research situation of Lodge's literary criticism and novels at home to give a research background for this thesis in Part 3.Diversity of David Lodge's novels is the diversity and complexity of the themes and creation methods. The themes of David Lodge's novels can be divided into Catholic Novels , Campus Novels and the novels about artists., and any of novels is distinct from the others: one is the dynastic history of British Catholicism; another laughs at the views on marriage and giving birth of Catholicism; anoher shows a state of lost of present Catholic ; another assures that the life today is happiness in Heaven. The themes which seem inconsistent show Daved Lodg's consideration about British Catholicism after the Second World War. The thesis thinks Lodge stands for a changing Catholicism in England. Obsolete fossilized canon laws should be changed to acclimatise to the modern life today.On the other hand , the spirit of positive intense ethics and humanity of Catholicism shoud be stayed and developed to help modern men face turbulence and catastrophe of the sociaty. As a British literary professor, he is concidering about the life in the campus and phenomena in the academic environment. Changing Places stresses the result of dialogue of English and American culturess. Nice work puts forward the question about the communication between education and industry. Thinking…talks about the problem of Conflicting and Blending between art and science. Small world gives us a strange but interesting world where scholars live. Besides such two themes above, Lodge's novels are concerned with other themes. All themes above are evidence of diversity of theme of David Lodge's novels. This thesis discusses such diversity in 3 parts , Charter 2.David Lodge made the most of all sorts of creation methods in the practice for novels creation since he had known the British literary tradition well to bring the diversity of the creation methods of novels. In the early stage , Lodge wrote novels in a traditonal way——realism. But he broke it through and added other ways to it. Later his novels are more experimental——modernism, post-modernism are in the leading place in novels creation. Nevertheseless, he never left the humanism tradition., and realism traditon is contained in the structure of post-modernism. Nowadays his novels witting comes back to the realism. The three writing ways are used together and it is very hard to be separated from each other. Chapter 3 is consist of three parts which correspond with three creation methods: realism, modernism and post-modernism, the ways in which three ways used together in the novels. Not only can it analies the creation methods of Lodge's novels clearly but embody the diversity of creation methods and the blending back of the diversity in this way.Obviously do David Lodge's novels have diversity. However, diversity is superficial.In the deepest sense, there are unified factors under the diversity .Finally diversity is blended. The hybrid is composed of scientism and humanism. The hybrid is composed of realism, modernism and post-modernism. The hybrid is composed of the view of religion and secular view. It is because that David Lodge keeps his eys on the human and their thoughts. These are what it talks about in Chapter 4 which is consist of two parts. One is about the hybrid of multi-factor, and the other is about the reason why the hybrid is being and how David Lodge make a choice in the wave of post-modernism .
