Research On Training Vocational College Students' Learning Strategy In English Listening Teaching

The college English teaching reform lays definitely that fostering the students' ability to learn on their own should be centered so as to improve their comprehensive application ability. In order to adapt to this requirement, fostering this kind of ability has been one of the most important contents being taught in college. Vocational college students, as a result of various learning backgrounds, have a weaker knowledge basis. In addition, their English level, especially listening is far from the standard of the students in other colleges. Their deficient learning strategies and being disabled to learn independently have a great influence on their listening comprehension. Thus, an important challenge ahead of teachers is how to strengthen this ability, overcome their listening difficulties, and improve their listening situation.This research is based on the studies of learning strategies and training theories domestically and abroad. Aimed at vocational college students'English listening situation and their using of learning strategies, it brings the training of learning strategies into English listening teaching, and tries to construct a listening teaching mode which is suitable for vocational college students. The researcher experimented with two parallel classes majoring in Oil Exploration of 2006 in Shandong Shengli Vocational College for a term of 14 weeks. The experimental class received learning strategy-based training. Combined with listening teaching, the training adopted a direct and integrated training mode. The control class followed the normal teaching without research interference. The following problems are intended to be discussed in this research: after training of learning strategy, whether the level of listening and comprehension will be improved obviously; whether the awareness of using learning strategies will be improved clearly; whether there will be difference of training effect among different listening levels of students; whether the listening difficulties will be overcome efficiently; whether the listening anxiety can be reduced efficiently.The results of the research indicates that the new mode of teaching can improve the levels of listening comprehension and the awareness of using learning strategies efficiently among the vocational college students. By using SPSS13.0 to analyse the research data and discussing, this research arrives at the following conclusion:1. The training of learning strategies in English listening teaching can improve the listening comprehension levels of students in vocational college efficiently.2. The training of learning strategies can enrich the strategy knowledge of students, raise the awareness of using learning strategies and enhance ability to learn independently.3. The training of learning strategies has the best effect on the students whose listening levels are equal to or below the required standard before the experiment. Their achievements can be improved by a big range and they have much progress in the using of learning strategies.4. The training of learning strategies can help the student to overcome their listening difficulties effectively, improve their listening situation. But learning strategy training has few advantages in overcoming the difficulties caused by the lack of the language knowledge.5. The training of learning strategies can reduce the listening anxiety efficiently. It is one of the best ways to reduce the listening anxiety in vocational college English teaching.Based on the experiments, this research explores the effect of training of learning strategies in listening in vocational college English teaching, and lays the significance and functions of learning strategies in listening to solve the problems appearing in English listening teaching in vocational college. It also constructs a new listening teaching mode combined with training of learning strategies, which is suitable for students in vocational college. At the same time, it provides beneficial trials and exploration theoretically and practically for training the learning strategies in English listening of vocational students.
