As vocational education takes the employment as the orientation, employment goals should be put in the first place. The Occupational orientation and the current situation of listening capabilities of Tourism English major students indicate that they need to have a higher capability in listening. In the past, scholars have also done some researches on Oxford’s Strategy Training Model, but they basically focus on undergraduates, lacking in HVC (Higher Vocational College) students majoring in Tourism English. On the other hand, the achievement in the application of learning strategies is far more inadequate. So the study of the application of Oxford’s strategy training model in the teaching of listening of Higher Vocational College Students majoring in Tourism English is particularly urgent. The study is an empirical research which is based on O’Malley and Chomat’s learning strategy theory and guided by Oxford’s strategy training model. The purpose is to explore whether the English listening teaching with the guidance of this model can improve teaching situation of listening in HVC (Higher Vocational College). The study adopted the method of combining the quantitative research and qualitative research. There are 100 students which are in Grade Two in the Listening Class of Tourism English Majors in Higher Vocational College participated in this experiment. The experiment was conducted an entire semester. The research adopted listening English tests, questionnaires and interviews as the main research methods to collect the experimental data, then statistically analyzed by SPSS.Through the questionnaire two, interviews, and the paired samples T-tests of the pre-test and post-test scores in both experimental class and control class, it is found that listening strategy training should be incorporated into HVC(Higher Vocational College) English teaching and the findings are listed as follows:(1) The main factor influencing listening comprehension is the vocabulary, memory, concentration, familiar with the theme of the article, and the ability to distinguish the key and the focus. (2) The frequency of students’listening strategy use is very low. Students usually use cognitive strategies and they are still weak in more specific cognitive techniques. The students’ use of meta-cognitive strategies is low. Most students realize the importance of social and affective strategies, but they seldom consciously cultivate those aspects. This also proves that students are not active in practicing their listening. (3)The ability of listening comprehension of the experimental class was significantly higher than that of the control class, it indicates that Oxford’s strategy training model can improve the ability of listening comprehension effectively, enhance the consciousness of listening strategy use, and increase the abilities of self-directed learning and cooperative learning. (4) After training eight strategies, the students considered that elaboration, inferencing, imagery and selective attention are more efficient in improving their listening ability. The research results have certain practical significance for higher vocational college students’ English listening teaching. The results of this study were to validate previous studies, and also the supplement. It’s sincerely hoped that this study will play a role in promoting educational reform of listening teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges.
