This paper focuses on the time adverbs in Modern Chinese.It researches the source of them through four phases such as ancient times, mediaeval times,neoteric Chinese and Modern Chinese,from Xian-qin to Liang-han,from Wei-jin to Nan-bei,from Tang Dynasty to Song Dynasty,from Yuan Dynasty to Ming Dynasty,from Qing Dynasty to Modern Chinese.It probes into the changes and summarizes the characteristics through comparing and summarizing,static state rendering, explaining and analyzing,qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, commonness research and individually analysis.It should explain the development of the time adverbs in Modern Chinese,offer the references of empty words completely and renew Chinese dictionary helpful from the laws of them.It divides into three parts.The first introduces the significance,the means,the theory,the stages of Chinese,the classes of adverbs in Modern Chinese,the definition and classes of the time adverbs in Modern Chinese generally and the language materials.The second quests for the headstream and the laws of the time adverbs in Modern Chinese through individuality analysis of them.The third gives summing-up,that is,the time adverbs in Modern Chinese have polarized and changed,that is,a time adverb that has one meaning,two or more meaning and has changed to another one.The time adverbs in Modern Chinese have changed from substantive to empty word and further.The Disyllablization comes into being from Chun-Qiu and Zhan-guo to Wei-jin and Nan-bei and it makes the meaning of them clearly.
