On Metafiction

Metafiction(a.k.a.metafictional techniques) is a new comer in the fiction field.It plays an important role in the development of fictions,narratology and literary theories. However,in spite of the somewhat quiet emerging of metafictions in China,studies on contemporary Chinese metafictions are yet to be carried out profoundly.The passion about writing and reading metafictions is not equally matched by relevant theories.This essay,based on previous findings,will study metaficton as a state by connecting to other writing techniques and thoughts,instead of studying its theories.Chapter One compares metafictions with stream-of-consciousness fictions by expounding the concept,influence and characteristics of stream-of-consciousness fictions.And analyzing common grounds and the different between the two styles.This chapter also stated the influence of stream-of-consciousness writings on metafictions.Chapter Two probes into the influence of existentialism on the development of metafiction by discussing the connection between metafiction and existentialism via the concept of existentialism per se:1) a survey on human relationships;2) being and freedom of individuals.Chapter Three analyzes the connection between deconstructionism and metafiction:1) negating the author's authority and emphasizes the uncertainty of context;2) fading the theme and emphasizing the "literal game"Anyway,this essay probes into the origins and characteristics of metafictions by referring to stream-of-consciousness fictions,existentialism and deconstructionism, therefore improves our understanding of metafictions.
