A Study On The Market Value Of Zhang Ailing's Literary Works

Zhang Ailing is an important writer in the history of Chinese modern literature. In recent years, Zhang Ailing's literary works have been developed into popular movies and TV plays which are broadcasted on famous channels frequently, her undiscovered and posthumous manuscripts have been excavated, and her former residence in Shanghai is repaired and opened by Shanghai's city government. All these facts impel Zhang Ailing to be a cultural consumptive symbol in Chinese cultural market, attracting many literary and cultural academicians'concern. With investigating and analyzing her literary works'market value, this thesis lays stress on looking for theoretical and facts evidences for their popularity. Based on my reading experience, my research on Zhang Ailing's biography and her works'publishing and adapting history as well as the results of investigating how her works are consumed today, using microeconomics, medium consumption and reader-reception aesthetics theories, this thesis tries to authenticate the conclusion that"the market value of Zhang Ailing's literary works determines their important standings in Chinese contemporary cultural market"with the method of empirical tests and statistic researches.On the basis of concluding the change of Zhang Ailing's status in Chinese history of literature, the characteristics and reasons of the change, this thesis systematically analyzes and theoretically interprets the market value of her literary works in following aspects. Firstly, the marketable attractions of Zhang Ailing's literary works. The legendary character made by"crack narrative"is the key factor for Zhang Ailing's literary works'renascence, the creative philosophy of"observing in a distance"realizes their popularity, the colorful western and eastern cultural elements extend their oversea market, and their unique artistic characteristic is scanning humanity and the literal charm, the join forces of popular newspapers and magazines in Old Shanghai helped them gain their cultural market life. The ideological, historical, exquisite content, which is considered to be its main market attractions, as well as the medium's acceptance and propagation, cater for contemporary cultural consumers'reading interest. Secondly, Zhang Ailing's literary works'marketable impetus. Their pronouncement, publish and marketing is the impetus to her progress and success, many of her novels were recomposed to be movies and TV plays, the deep social and cultural reasons for recomposing is the pivot of this chapter.
