Translation is an important cross-cultural communication. It is a bridge that links different cultures. Culture-loaded words directly reflect the nation's history and uniqueness. China, with a splendid history and abound heritage, has numerous culture-loaded words. Therefore, How to translate the culture-loaded words in a faithful way has been the focus of the translation studies. Translation is cross-language, cross-culture, and cross-society. As the most representative novel in modern literature, Fortress Besieged of Qian Zhongshu has a sea of culture-loaded words, which is one of the prominent features. The readers can learn something more about China via the culture-loaded words; however, the understanding of culture-loaded words has been the obstacles to the foreign readers as well as the cross-cultural exchange. In conclusion, it is crucial for us to explore the translation of culture-loaded words.From pragmatic equivalence perspective, the thesis studies the relationship among language, culture and translation. It puts forward that culture is closely connected with language, while language reflects cultural difference. Translation is an important device in cross-cultural communication. It is not only a linguistic transformation but also a cultural transfer. The different living environments, religious beliefs, value systems have deposited unique features of culture in the long history. The author is trying to make a comparison between Chinese and English in many aspects, and try to figure out how to deal with words from a pragmatic perspective.The thesis is a study on the translation of culture-loaded words from pragmatic perspective. Examples are taken from the translation version Fortress Besieged. Based on the theory of pragmatic equivalence, the thesis classified the culture-loaded words into different groups, and suggested methods are put forward to deal with the translation of culture-loaded words. Pragmatic equivalence in pragmatic translation is a new approach to study culture-loaded words; the translators should not adhere to the form of the SL, but try to find the most natural and closest correspondence to achieve equivalence. Meanwhile, the author puts forward her suggestions on some of the versions of culture-loaded words in Fortress Besieged.The thesis aims to present a new approach to resolve the problems arising in translation process, in order to advocate systematic methods to be the guidance to translation practice.
