After World War Two, the prestige of the Great Britain has fallen off remarkably, which compelled it to cut down the gigantic system of oversea colony. As the U.K.'s influence withdrawed from the Indian Ocean, the waters and its surrounding area which have the strategic importance backed away from the"Pax Britannica", then soon became another batterfield of Cold War and object of American and Russian expansion. The drastic changes of Indian Ocean's situation drawed lots of scholars and specialists'attention.The study on U.S. policy in the Indian Ocean is a branch of study on history of Cold War and American foreign policy, whose achievements have been reflected mainly during the 1970s and 80s when the superpowers'rivalry in the Indian Ocan was the most intense. This dissertation starts with the existing research findings, then arrange and summarize regularly, analyse and discuss objectively, in oder to give an overview of study in this field through surveying the contents, characteristics, orderliness, advantages and disadvantages of the research findings, which can help grasp the study situation and overall thread.The paper consists of introduction, text, epilogue and bibliography, and the text divides into three parts:The first part classifies the research findings systemically as monograph, thesis, academic meeting included collection of thesises, from which the author could seek for the characteristics and orderliness of the research findings, so as to hold macroscopically the current research situation.The second part will deepen and refine the summarization furthermore, describing the stresses and disputes referred in former study with great emphasis, and elaborating each issue, genre with its classic study achievements by different specail subjects. Understanding the details in current study and finding out its biases and exploring its divergences, it could be realized scientically and rationally.Based on the above elaboration, the third part expounds the inadequacy and the evolvable space of existing research on the following aspects: historical data, content, angle of view, cross domain and domestic research gaps. Sincerely the author hopes to provide a direction for the later scholars'research.
