In order to pave his way to being a government official,Du Fu left Qilu for Chang'an in around 746 AD.Though faced with numerous difficult encounters,he finally became a military councilor in the department of military, which was supervised by the right defence in 755 AD.However, just one month after Du Fu commenced his official career,he was forced to quit because of the insurgency led by An Lu Shan.Following,he left the capital city and headed for Feng'xian where he reunited with his family.Du Fu named this specific period of time as "Life In The Capital City".The title of the thesis is "The Studies Of Du Fu's Life In The Capital City, ChangAn".It comprises five chapters. The first chapter is a general elaboration of this study. It illustrates the actual meaning and the duration of "Life In The Capital City",which is the scope of this research. It also provides a summary of Du Fu's life in Chang An.Chapter 2 mentions a reformation based on predecessors' research work, proposed after detailed reading of the text. This chapter puts forward the possibility that Du Fu made his living by selling proses and poems.Through analyzing Du Fu's popularity in Tang Dynasty, the public acceptance and admiration of his poems, his self-comments on his literature work and talents, together with some Du Fu's writings that serve as testimony of him selling literature work for a living, the researcher tries to evaluate the possibility of Du Fu selling his proses and poems, attending banquets, going on trips as a guest or a companion in exchange for food, money and accommodation when living in financial difficulty.Chapter 3 is a textual investigation on the ways Du Fu sought food when he was living in Chang'an.It stresses explaining the ways Du Fu employed to seek food. For instance,he sold medicine in the city and visited friends and relatives, hoping them to offer meals by courtesy. The researcher also intends to analyze Du Fu's will and his psychological ideology.Chapter 4,the last chapter, looks into Du Fu's career pursuit. It illustrates the process Du Fu attempted to become an official by taking imperial examinations, writing poems to senior officials asking for recommendations and presenting his proses to the emperor. He was eventually given the opportunities to become an officer of He'xi,and a military councilor in the department of military affairs supervised by the right defence. The researcher comes up with new opinion to justify Du Fu's choice of career. For the convenience of readers,a brief chronicle of Du Fu's life and poems is supplemented at the end of the thesis.
