In this paper, the writer has conducted a survey and research on Chinese character learning strategies of 65 American students in the initial stage, attempted to reveal the cognitive features of American students for Chinese character and examined their usage of various Chinese character learning strategies, combined with their Chinese character learning conditions to analyze the effectiveness of these learning strategies and their influence on the efficiency of learning Chinese characters. The research was conducted in two phases, based on the collection of the 65 students' exercise books, the character books, class dictation, class notes, Chinese characters learning strategies questionnaires. And the writer also interviewed 15 students out of these 65 students about their Chinese character learning strategies in order to study whether their usage of character learning strategies changes in different learning phases and whether the changes of their learning strategies will influence their efficiency of learning Chinese characters. In addition, through interviewing four students and recording all the interviews , the paper involves the analysis of the case study to identify the different selection of learning strategies between successful and unsuccessful students and the different effectiveness of their character learning. The writer finally pointed out that teachers should guide students in how to use the correct and effective learning strategies and try to establish the best mode of teaching Chinese characters.
