Character learning strategies are the operations that learners employ to obtain, store, pick-up and utilize characters. Teaching methods in class should be arranged according to learners' specific situations in order to make those strategies carried out effectively. Considering the Euro-American students usually have difficulties in some aspects of character learning, such as font recognition, strokes writing, pronunciation and meaning memorization, teaching work in class should be arranged according to the their actual situation, according to their situation of character learning strategies and the characters' own characteristics. With the information processing theories of learning and memorization, this thesis put forward a new characters teaching method matching the character learning strategies, in order to foster the learners' sense of character learning strategies and enhance the effect of character learning. Studying the character learning strategies and teaching methods for them is of great theoretical and practical significance.In the thesis questionnaires are used to investigate Euro-American students of primary stage in the Overseas Education School of Xiamen University. To increase the samples, we send emails and ask more learners in other school to help conduct this questionnaire survey. All the questionnaires are analyzed with SPSS with quantitative and qualitative analysis.Character learning strategies include: (1) form training strategies, (2) function (meaning) training strategies, (3) Native tongue strategy. The form training strategies include font strategy, stroke strategy, sound and meaning strategy; function (meaning) training strategies include inducing strategy, application strategy, guessing strategy.The survey shows that (1) The Euro-American students of primary stage are more accustomed to use the form training strategies,(2) they most frequently use font strategy, (3) they do not often use inducing strategy, (4)they use application strategy the least frequently, (5)there is no significant difference in gender in the use of strategies.Character teaching methods mainly include: (1) parts analysis and contrastive analysis, (2) focused literacy recognition method and character riddles guessing; (3) font, sound and meaning matching, (4) copy writing; (5) word formation discrimination (6) English-Chinese translation.
