As many teachers, researchers and linguists have frequently noted, listening is primary in language learning, in that it comes before speaking, reading and writing in the development of communication skills. However, as the least explicit course, listening is a crux of matter in learning and teaching, thus making itself a course demanding high teaching techniques of teachers. So, as English teachers, our primary task in listening teaching is to make clear what are effective strategies and methods to help students in learning listening. This dissertation, by analyzing results from a questionnaire on teachers' understanding of listening and listening teaching, makes a conclusion that though teachers have recognition of some comparatively new teaching methods such as communicative approach, or task-based approach, the practical teaching still follows the traditional PPP teaching method (that is, present action, practice and production). The gap is clearly revealed by the activities adopted in teaching listening. In order to find a solution, the author turns to the task-based approach because the focus of this approach is "task", or activity. However, literature review on some domestic study on task-based approach is. provided disappointing to the author: the activities designed in some studies are nothing new at all. Thus, according to the basic principle of task-based approach, the author of this dissertation designed a sample lesson to render some useful suggestions for further study.
