Task-based approach is a logical development of communicative language teaching. And it has displayed its increasing importance in language learning and teaching, In China, task-based approach has been implemented to the teaching of primary schools and middle schools. Moreover, many scholars have advocated the application of task-based approach to the teaching in higher education. "Learner-centred and learning by doing" is the key in task-based approach,In the process of doing the task, learners cooperate and interact to achieve their goals. One of traditional listening teaching paradigms in vocational college is characterized by playing-tape—listening to aural texts—doing exercises—checking the answers. In such context, learners' listening proficiency is not improved as expected.A quasi-experiment is conducted to investigate whether TBA is more effective than the traditional paradigm in listening class. The participants in the experiment are the sophomore English majors in a vocational college. And the total number is 74 of whom 36 learners belong to the experimental group and 38 to the control group. Then a comparative analysis is made before and after the experiment. The data collected from the test scores and questionnaires are dealt with quantitatively and qualitatively. The research questions are as follows:1) Is TBA conducive to improving learners' listening proficiency more effectively than the traditional teaching paradigm?2) Is TBA more conducive to enhancing learners' interest in studying listening than the traditional teaching paradigm?3) Is TBA more conducive to cultivating learners' better cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies than the traditional teaching paradigm? The results show that TBA is more effective than the traditional approach in listening teaching and can increase learners' interest and is more conducive to cultivating learners' better listening learning strategies such as cognitive andmetacognitive.
