This paper begins with a questionnaire on graduates working in Suzhou Industrial Park. The investigation has highlighted that vocabulary and culture are the two most difficult areas that confront these people in using English for vocational purposes. On the basis of the investigation, the paper moves on to discuss the kinds of principles teachers should follow in the teaching of English vocabulary. The principles introduced and discussed in this paper include: the principle of acquiring technical vocabulary, the principle of grasping words'association meaning, the principle of using the context to teach vocabulary, the principle of consulting dictionaries to acquire vocabulary, the principle of teaching multi-word items and the principle of getting the"stringing"information. Having probed into the fundamental teaching principles, the paper makes an attempt to put forward some improvement strategies, which include: setting specific standards and requirements, using multimedia resources, implementing a variety of resources and employing workable activities to enhance vocabulary learning. The conclusion not only sums up the whole paper, it also points out that vocabulary teaching in vocational colleges should utilize the different kinds of resources in our society, the goal of which is to enable the English learners in vocational colleges to become independent learners and competent users of the language. Cultivating students'culture sensibility in intercultural communication should also become an integral part of language teaching and learning in vocational schools.
