With the development of computer multimedia technology in the 21st century, the scope of computer multimedia application to education has become much wider compared with that in last century. And much closer is the connection between computer technology and teaching activities in various disciplines. Nevertheless, the application of computer multimedia technology to the teaching of English for science and technology (henceforth EST) is still at an initial stage, which indicates the lagging in the teaching approach to EST as well.The structure and layout of this thesis mainly follows the four steps: theoretical framework, teaching approach, specific operation and research. Firstly, the thesis presents detailed analysis of the features of both EST and computer aided language learning (henceforth CALL) . And the feasibility of applying computer multimedia technology to teaching activities of EST is analyzed under the framework of constructivism. Secondly, the cooperative method put forward by other researchers is included for both discussion of improvement of teaching method of EST and designing of the multimedia application. Thirdly, great importance is attached to not only theoretical research but also specific operation. Under the framework of constructivism and analysis of features of EST, the author designed the multimedia courseware in this study with pertinence through the use of director 8.5 with Macromedia Company. The designing process is fully illustrated in the thesis for the reference of the peers. And the unique features of the multimedia application are also introduced. Finally, an investigation was made aiming at discovering the effect of the multimedia courseware used in teaching EST, and accordingly, analysis and discussion were conducted following the investigation.The results of the investigation prove the positive effects of the multimedia on the following aspects: arousing students' interests, improving efficiency of the learning of EST, helping comprehension and enhancing supply of information and etc. This thesis is the result of combining theoretical research and practical investigation. Incidentally, it's believed that this study is still at its beginning with regard to improving the teaching approach of EST.
