The teaching purpose for English in vocational colleges is to enhance the students’ comprehensive quality and improve their communicative competence in their practical use of the language. Improving communicative competence should be based on language accuracy and fluency. Therefore, it’s necessary to teach English grammar to non-English majors in higher vocational colleges. Through analyzing the present situation of English grammar teaching and learning in non-English majors in higher vocational colleges, we find that there are a lot of problems lying in the traditional English grammar teaching model. So, in order to improve the efficiency and the quality of English grammar teaching, the author thinks it necessary and important to conduct a research into the optimization of English grammar teaching for non-English majors in higher vocational colleges through multimedia technology. Hence, the author sets the topic as research work for the thesis. Meanwhile, the author proposes specific optimizing methods through operating multimedia technology flexibly and effectively and setting out from improving the students’ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing and so on according to their perception rules, assuming that the linguistic context created by multimedia teaching means can facilitate the students’ organic combination of form, meaning and function of the grammar in their practical use of English thus improving their English communication ability.On the basis of theoretical study, the thesis emphasizes the importance of the grammar teaching, analyzes the relationship between the context theory and the grammar teaching. Besides, the thesis illustrates the advantages and the principles of multimedia-assisting foreign language teaching through studying the relevant literature, all of which are supposed to provide strong theoretical support for the research. To prove the practical effect of the study, the author deigned an experimental study for one semester in two classes where the author teaches. The results from the analysis of the experimental data suggest that the multimedia-assisting teaching method is of great benefit to English-teaching. Firstly, it is helpful to optimize the traditional English grammar teaching model, and tends to improve the teaching effect of English grammar. Secondly, it is helpful to stimulate students’ interest in learning English and improve their ability of autonomous learning. A rich variety of language activities can be created with the help of the multimedia-assisting teaching method. Multidimensional, three-dimensional and dynamic linguistic contexts created by means of multimedia can arouse students’ passion for English-learning and promote their positive thinking and initiative studies. Thirdly, multimedia technology can create those contexts resembling to the actual working and living situation in English, which will offer the students the authentic language environments, thus improving their actual language ability. So multimedia-assisting English grammar teaching can improve the students’ comprehensive ability of using language effectively. In addition, the research results in this paper are expected to provide a certain reference value for those English teachers in similar higher vocational colleges when it comes to the improvement of grammar teaching.
