There is little thorough and systematical research on numeral-noun construction. And there are still issues in this respect worth researching. For instance, there is no thorough investigation about the progress of this construction developing from the ancient days to now;there is still divergence about the definition of this construction; the internal structure of this construction needs researching;issues such as how this construction is used in modern Chinese language and why it exists need to be studied; and there is little research comparing this construction to the numeral-qualifier-noun construction. In order to find sound reasons for the issues mentioned above, and based on the research done by others, the methods of synchronic description, diachronic research, contrastive study and case study have been taken to make a multi-angular description and classification about numeral-noun constructions.1.In this thesis, firstly a diachronic research is done to study how this construction is used in the Chinese of different eras, from the ancient time to the modern time.2.Later a synchronic study is done to thoroughly analyze the internal structure of the numeral-noun construction. As the numerals and nouns that could fall into this construction is restricted. This thesis analyzes the characteristics and class of the numerals and nouns that could fall into this construction, and sums up those nouns that could not.On this basis, the context of the numeral-noun construction in modern Chinese and the reasons for which this construction exist are concluded.3.The thesis makes a contrastive study on the numeral-noun construction and the numeral-qualifier-noun construction to find their differences and relations. And a further description and analyses about the variant construction "yi+adjective+noun" is made to work out its structural characteristics and types.
