The 1960-1980s saw an intense turmoil in the history of American women. In this period, a large number of American women joined the labor force, which created a high record and expanded the pattern of employment.Housewives went out to work to lead to a great impact on millions of American families. It changed the patterns, functions and even moral concepts of the American family.New family issues arose.Although they are not directly attributed to the immense employment of women,no one denies the close ties in between.Like any other country in the world, employment of American women had serious defects in comparison with that of men, including the occupational distribution of gender separation, unequal pay for equal work and"the feminization of poverty".The development of the second American women movement gave rise to the awareness of equality,so women desired more economic equality. Therefore, the U.S.federal government had to pass a series of bills, such as the Titleâ…¦of the Civil Right Act of 1964,Equal Pay for Equal Work of 1963,Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1974,and Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978.All this had great effects on ensuring the equal employment of women. This article is attempted to reveal a series of issues in relation to unequal women employment that exists in a so-called"democracy"and"equality"country.This thesis mainly uses the American official data, report writings and the works of American scholars. The methods in the study are based on Marxist historical materialism, and Marxist concept of women. The author uses history, sociology, demography and the statistics in the research and analyzes the conditions of American women employment between 1960s to the 1980s and all its impacts. The paper includes introduction, main body, conclusion, appendix and references. The main body has been divided into five parts:The first part simply introduces American women employment before the 1960s.The second part introduces American women employment between the 1960s to the 1980s.According to the analysis of this historical period, the employment rate and pattern of the white, black and immigrant women in America have both changed greatly. The third part expounds the impacts of American women employment between the 1960s to the 1980s.It mainly analyses impacts of American women employment on the family, such as,change of American family, ethics and appearance of family issues. The fourth part analyzes the American social environment in association with the women employment, including the women movement, the measures taken by the federal government to promote women employment and quality. The fifth part accounts for problems of American women employment during this period, occupational sex segregation, income difference with men, and"the feminization of poverty".The conclusion makes a simple summary of American women employment between the 1960s to the 1980s,calling for reference for China to learn something from America. Although China has been advocating social equality, the deep-rooted traditional consciousness still has serious impacts. It causes the sex discrimination in employment and other social fields,so it is either difficult for women to find jobs or to get fairly paid.As a result, the paper calls for continuing efforts to be made for social equality between men and women.
