Lei Guiyuan is a forerunner of Chinese patern studies who has devoted all his life to the studies and education of pattern. In respect of pattern studies, he laid the foundation of scientific theoretical system of pattern. In respect of pattern education, he conducted exploration in teaching aiming at exercising students'design thinking as well as promoting students'creative ability.He bravely put forward measures to improve teaching with the the responsibility of a pattern designer, which placed Chinese traditional pattern to a unprecedented new high and thus unlocked the door of treasure-house of Chinese traditional pattern. Although as the development of times, some of his points of view, such as considering"mannered,striped-pants and clotted"as rules of pattern modeling and then regarding copying as an antecedent lesson of pattern teaching, reflect his one-sideness and subjectivity to some extent, his academic thoughts of pattern is valuable fortune to later generation consistently, which should not only inherit his outcomes but also continue his undertaking and strive for a bright future of pattern.
