The concept of corpus, which is a body of written text or transcribed speech that can serve as a basis for linguistic analysis and description, has been introduced into China in recent years. As a newly introduced research and teaching method in our educational circles, especially in recent years, it has developed into an effective method and tool for foreign language teaching. Corpus linguistics was used in teaching, especially in English and American literature teaching, which has attracted our country's linguists and foreign language teaching experts' attention. In order to learn better about current research and application status of corpus in our country's foreign language teaching, especially corpus-based method which is used in the literature application teaching, based on the analysis about some research papers on corpus and foreign language teaching in Chinese Journal Network and English language teaching-related literature thesis, the author took the twentieth century American novelist Jack London's famous autobiographical novel Martin·Eden as the research object. Based on corpus and foreign language teaching theory, the author applied corpus analysis methods into the literature appreciation class, with WordSmith and AntConc corpus concordance software to collect a large number of different types of data, and carried on the analysis and research about the novel "Martin·Eden".This paper used the task-based teaching means. According to the corpus types by concordancing, appropriate classroom activities were designed, in order to enhance the students' sense of participation in the literary application class, and change the traditional teacher-centered, teachers controlling the classroom situation so as to achieve satisfactory classroom effects that the students' active learning, participation, reflection and discussion.This study was an empirical research. The students received the corpus-based method training during the whole semester in an attempt to cultivate learners' autonomy and to encourage them to manage their own studies. Three questions were discussed in the study: (i) How would corpus-based teaching methods be applied into literature appreciation class; and how would it be used to analyze literary work Martin·Eden? (ii) Through the use of teaching methods of corpus-based analysis, whether students could open up their horizons to appreciate the literary works; and whether students could extensively accumulate their vocabularies through the studying of literary texts, grasp the language features and plot development, as well as through the corpus concordance tools whether students could be more efficient to prospect the characteristics of characters in the novel, and finally through this kind of method, we could be able to strike out another direction of the analysis of literary texts? (iii) Whether the use of corpora analysis of foreign language teaching would have the new teaching and learning performance, whether it could enhance the students' interests in studying literature?This paper through the empirical research got the conclusion: the abundant corpus resources which obtained by reasonable examples that used the concordancing methods would greatly improve students' second language learning effects. Students could be more profound and accurate understanding the relationship between the wording of the works and characteristics of discourse structure with the novel's central idea in the application class within the limited class time. Therefore, in order to change the old vague reading way which was carried out to understand the works, the corpus-based method was used to save the wasted time that students used to aimlessly look for the wonderful parts of the novel. In this way, the previous simple teaching methods were changed from learning the words and semantic isolation sentences, splitting and the one-sided analysis of literary works to upgrade the teaching method to the high-level aspects of reading and appreciation, so that it combined using the corpus linguistics, literature concordance and practice, and literature appreciation teaching practice as a whole body vision into reality. And it enhanced the student's self-interest in learning and changed boring situations in literature appreciation class, as well as it could find out a new path for foreign language teaching reform. The author hoped that the related conclusions would provide some references for the future research and application in English literature application class.
