| There are three schools in the study of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, namely word-based teaching method, character-based teaching method and teaching methodology of morphemes. This thesis clarifies these schools in terms of origin, contents, representative figures and representative works, while focuses on detail discussion of backgrounds and current study of the teaching methodology of morphemes.This thesis attempts to explore the teaching methodology of morphemes by analysing the method from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Theoretically, the thesis compares the teaching methodology of morphemes to character-based teaching method, drawing advantages and disadvantages of the former, and analyses theoretical basis for the methodology (includes linguistic base, psychological base and pedagogic base). It is concluded that the teaching methodology of morphemes has no significant differences to character-based teaching method. Despite its scientific basis and advantages, this methodology is more of a vocabulary teaching than a systematic methodology, and it is criticized for lack of teaching materials, difficulty in explaining word formation etc.. Practically, this thesis explores the possibility of applying this methodology in teaching practice through analysing it as a teaching system as well as a vocabulary teaching method. As a teaching system, the teaching methodology of morphemes needs to be improved. However, The Enlightenment of Chinese Language and Characters provides the possibility for developing this method into a teaching system. The thesis also analyses the pros and cons of this book, hoping to provide references for compiling text books in future.The teaching methodology of morphemes is commonly used as a vocabulary teaching approach in present teaching practice. This thesis further discusses contents, approaches and advantages of this methodology applied in different phases of teaching practice in detail through a case study of popular text books of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. |
