People in our country know Eileen Chang mainly as an outstanding writer and literator. In fact she is appreciated more than being a writer internationally.Yet Chang's outstanding talents as a translator is known very little in mainland China. This thesis selects Eileen Chang's translation phenomenon as the object of study, mainly because at first, the translator is of course the decisive factor that makes the target text equivalent to the source text, and case study of outstanding translators obviously is a very important part of both translation theories and practice.Eileen Chang is a special translator.Chang received western education in an English-speaking school when she was in her teen ages. She was regarded as an exceptional kid with gifts in the arts field including reading, writing and drawing. Her talents had been paid enough attention to and had been developed from her early age.And she later got the No.1 results in the international entrance examinations in Asia area given by London University.Chang's literary works occupy very important place in millions and millions of readers'heart and so in contemporary Chinese literature history. And Chang has even more readers overseas since Chang left China in 1950s and settled down in the U.S.A.as a professional writer and translator.Chang translated widely from fictions to prose, from poetry to play-scripts,not just introducing American literature to China, but also enriching American literature. However,we can hardly find any remarks on Chang's translation in papers or books about Chinese translated literature history or history of literary translation. This thesis consists of three chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion. At the beginning of the thesis we review Chang's life experience because translators'subjective factors such as their intelligence, purpose, knowledge, bilingual competence, creativity, values, aesthetics, and their social status are the main, stable, positive, and beneficial ones that decide the quality of translation. And we try to find out Chang's achievements and contributions as a bilingual writer and translator and her attainments as a literator. And it is find that she holds that the most suitable translator should be the writer of the original text. And then she makes flexibility in the use of different translation strategies when necessary. With outstanding knowledge about both Chinese and the Western world, Chang employs various translation strategies. In the middle of the thesis, analysing four of Eileen Chang's translations, namely The Old Man and the Sea,The Rouge of the North,The Rice-sprout Song and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,we mainly discuss four aspects of the translation strategies employed by Chang:the interventionist feminist strategies, platable foreignization achieving optimization, compensation from the borrowed western writing devices;and the hybridity essence. At the end of this thesis,we conclude that Eileen Chang's case study proves that the essential translation principle is to achieve faithfulness to the original text, but for different translators with different outside and inside condition and different subjectivity, they will surly employ different specific strategies or methods.
