Traditional translation theories stress the importance of equivalence between meanings and styles from the angle of modern linguistics. However, since the 1980s, a revolution has taken place in the field of translation, namely, the so-called "Cultural Turn". Scholars and translation theorists who try to get rid of the linguistic research methods hold the opinion that different cultures can never reach a real equality, thus such statements as "the pursuit of equivalence between words and meanings" in traditional translation theories have been greatly challenged. Therefore, postcolonial translation theories start to emerge in the circle of translation, and a great number of translation researchers turn to the new theory in an attempt to explain some phenomena in translation from the viewpoint of cultural criticism.Further globalization has promoted cultural exchanges among different ethnic groups, and as a result of that, strong culture cannot erode weak culture at will; cultures are growing to be interdependent. Accordingly, traditional translation strategies such as foreignization and domestication have been proved to be partial. This thesis points out that all translated texts are hybrid, and the so-called foreignization and domestication are simply divided by the degree of hybridity. Translating is a process of hybridity, and elements from both cultures involved in the process are preserved in the translated text to some extent. During this process, cultural and linguistic features from the source and target languages are mixed through hybridity. This phenomenon is objective, which cannot be neglected or eliminated, though it is indeed influenced by some internal and external factors. This thesis takes Yang Xiangyi and Gladys Yang’s version of Zhao Hua Xi Shi (Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk) as an example, aiming to argue the necessity and universality of hybridity in translated text. Through analysis, it draws the conclusion that Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang have taken a hybrid strategy in the translated version, and the translated text is neither completely foreignized nor domesticated. Chinese and English culture are intermingled in this text, and the hybrid text enriches the two languages at the cost of the purity of languages, though. As a translation strategy, hybridity is seen not only in the particular case, but also in other translated texts. At first the author introduces the theoretical background and puts forward the questions to be answered in this thesis, then what have been studied in this field are briefly introduced. Followed by previous researches, the author proposes a new idea with regard to hybridity in translation and gives a case study of Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang for the purpose of supporting the new viewpoint. Besides, the conclusion is spread to a broader field and the degree of hybridity is discussed as well.
