Translation Methods And Strategies For Scientific Terms In The Compilation Of Bilingual Dictionary

This thesis focuses on finding the effective translation strategies and methods forscientific terms during the bilingual dictionary compilation. Through the exampleanalysis from the dictionary-making project---A New Energy Engineering E-C andC-E Dictionary, the applicable translation strategies and methods are summarized withthe assistance from the existing research findings.The author of this paper participated in the dictionary compiling work from verybeginning to end, collected20,000words with colleagues. During the work process,the author played several roles as editor, reviewer or organizer, in collection words byplowing through erudite tomes on new energy fields, checking the new words withdictionaries and references, consulting experts on that field and discuss withclassmates and teachers, and reading everything that could be found in libraries.Through the work and by reading and researching some thesis and books on howto compile bilingual professional dictionary, the author found that the translation ofscientific terms shall be monosemy and concise in order to keep the terms in theunique meaning and clear form. When translating the new scientific term, creativethinking and parallel word-forming can be used in translation work. The translationmethods may be used flexibly in different cases separately or integrally. The authorsummarizes and proposes four basic and ten special translation methods respectivelyon compiling bilingual dictionary.
