Guided by the technical term of second language acquisition in linguistics-avoidance strategy, this thesis sets out to make a tentative study on the inadequate and even impossible translation in literature.Scholars have never ceased doing researches on the influence of avoidance strategy in language learning, and also, there are a great number of articles published on untranslatability and translatability; however, both of them are researched independently in their own field, that is,avoidance strategy in linguistics and translatability in translatology. Combined with the two,we can find that avoidance strategy frequently used in language learning sheds some light on the resolvent of difficult problems in literary translation. This thesis first states the linguistically theoretical basis and detailed investigation on avoidance strategy, including Larry Selinke's fossilization theory,Stephen D.Krashen's monitor hypothesis theory, and Tarone's communication strategies theory.Through the survey, the author points out that it is the people's general character to avoid the strange and the difficult in language learning, which can not be eliminated by anyone. There must exist the inevitability of avoidance strategy because people can not fully grasp all the knowledge of a language.Avoidance strategy also exists as the objective phenomenon to solve the inadequate and even impossible hindrances in literary translation which is regarded as a member of applied linguistics and one cognitive interaction.Literary translation is an act of communication carried out between two cultures through the medium of language, which involves the cognition of three parts:the original writer, the translator, and the target reader. So,the thesis provides an overall view of the reasons of avoidance strategy in literary translation, which includes ideological manipulation, cultural default, reception aesthetics, receptor's response, and translator's subjectivity. The translator sometimes has to sacrifice his own principles owing to the constraints mentioned above. In other words, sometimes the translator has to use avoidance strategy to translate the original literary works into a seemingly unfaithful version. In language learning, avoidance strategy mainly manifests in the avoidance of oral topics, vocabulary, and pragmatics;in literary translation,it mainly manifests in paraphrase, cultural substitution, partial translation, and liberal translation with compensation. After the analysis, the author concludes that there is no omnipotent or prefect manifestation in avoidance strategy. The best technical manifestations of avoidance strategy in literary translation that the translator may use is dependent on the particular translation purpose, the text typology, and the specific context. This thesis will provide a new perspective to researches on the solutions to the difficulties in literary translation. The more we get the understandings of avoidance strategy, the more we believe that untraslatability is just relative.By using avoidance strategy synthetically and efficiently, translators can better resolve the inadequate and even impossible translation in literature caused by the above factors.
