Comparative Study On Expressions Of Adjunct Actions Between Chinese And English

Expressions of adjunct actions refer to different actions taking place or different states progressing simultaneously. There are some typical expressions in Chinese, such as "yi bian...yibian...", "...de tong shi", "...de shi hou", "you...you..."ect. while in English there are "and", "as", "when", "at the same time" and so on.Expressional system of adjunct actions is different from not only traditional conjunctive system, but also regressive, coherent and adversative ones. However , there are also some overlaps among these systems. Expressional system of adjunct actions consists of copious contents, including some structures of expressing simultaneous actions occurring in the conjunctive type, some structures of expressing simultaneous actions by means of word meaning, and a few zero forms of expressing simultaneous actions.On the basis of previous studies, this paper systematically observes the differences and similarities of ways of expressions on adjunct actions between Chinese and English from three aspects through extensively collecting language corpora. Firstly, this paper mainly studies the differences and similarities of word order , word meaning and functions between Chinese and English according to the VP1 and VP2 expressions of adjunct actions . At the same time, author concludes some corresponding restrictive rules. Secondly, this paper compares the differences and similarities of syntactic functions , the absence of subjects and sentence structures between Chinese and English and illustrats the incorresponding points. Thirdly, this paper does a case study between "yi bian...yibian..."and "as" from a microscoptic view , revealing the subtle differences of expressions between Chinese and English. Finally, this paper reveals four characteristics for Chinese-English translation means: amplification, omission, reservation and conversion. This paper offers theoretical and practical guidance for Chinese-English translation, Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language and Teaching English.
