This study investigates the relationship between female university students'ambivalent sexism and achievement motivation by measuring their ambivalent sexism (including hostile sexism and benevolent sexism), achievement motivation (including motivation of pursuing success and motivation of avoiding failure) and their career planning. Results show that hostile sexism and"protective paternalism"of benevolent sexism relate negatively with achievement motivation, whereas"complementary gender differentiation"of benevolent sexism relates positively with achievement motivation. The further study shows that hostile sexism relates negatively with achievement motivation in the way of relating negatively with motivation of avoiding failure, which is the negative dimension of achievement motivation. In another word, female university students with strong hostile sexism are too afraid of failure to be highly achievement motivated. There is complex relationship between benevolent sexism and achievement motivation."Protective paternalism"of benevolent sexism relates negatively with motivation of pursuing success and positively with motivation of avoiding failure, while"complementary gender differentiation"of benevolent sexism relates positively with motivation of pursuing success. As a good supplement for motivation study of female university students, career planning can be forecasted by the following indicators: motivation of pursuing success relates positively with career planning; motivation of avoiding failure and fear of success, both relate negatively with career planning. And,"protective paternalism"of benevolent sexism and hostile sexism, which both have been proved to relate negatively with achievement motivation, both relate negatively with career planning.
