How Translator's Ethics Manipulate Translation Ethics

After the "cultural turn","translation ethics" have become a hot issue of translation studies.In the middle of the 1980s,Antoine Berman put forward "translation ethics".Since then,scholars both at home and abroad in the field of translation studies have been showing great interests in the ethics of translation.At present,the studies of this field are concentrated on the five models proposed by Andrew Chesterman,including ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment.The author has found that "translation ethics" is often mixed up with some terms related to it in the talks of many scholars.For this reason,the paper tries to review all of the studies about "translation ethics" and clarify a couple of terms which are usually confusing.They are translator's ethics,personal ethics,translation ethics and professional ethics.This paper also redefines its key word "translator's ethics". What's more,this research is based on a case study of the translator's ethics of a Chinese translator and thinker Lu Xun by describing his translation activities in order to see how translator's ethics manipulate translation ethics.The author concludes that translator's ethics,to a great extent,manipulate translation ethics during the process of translation,but it has no manipulation on professional ethics.Under different translator's ethics,Lu Xun's translation activities show different types of performances which indicate the manipulation of translator's ethics on translation ethics.Based on the five models of translation ethics proposed by Andrew Chesterman,this paper tries to do some relative studies to enlarge the ethical approach of Lu Xun's translation studies.
