Complete Translation (CT) and Translation Variation(TV) is a pair of notion proposed by Chinese scholar Huang Zhonglian. Deriving from traditional translation theory, Complete Translation combines the idea of faithfulness, translating meaning and transferring information of the original text. CT accedes and promotes the traditional 'faithfulness' theory; TV is the other unexplored area in translation studies besides CT. It based on the translation techniques of Yanfu. The proposal of Translation Variation Theory arouses the attention of academic world. Profound discussion about the definition and concept of CT and TV, and validity of TV strategy has been carried out by the field. With the understanding of early research on CT and TV, the present thesis points out the opposite relationship between the two, and hence inclusive relationship is false. The thesis also discusses relationship between the central units of CT and TV, as well as their function to build up CT+TV strategy.Recent years have witnessed rapid development of domestic subtitling research, but the orientations are relatively isolated. Scholars tempt to equal subtitle to text, and film language to role conversations. The thesis integrates the idea of Pu Zhehao's (2007) translation unit in audiovisual work and Gottlieb(1992)'s four audiovisual channels, and tries to establish a practical film subtitling strategy system under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory. The thesis applies the system to analyze the translation of two films. Namely, l)English to Chinese: Oscar film 'Schindler's list' with various language forms; 2)Chinese to English: Hongkong film 'The ashes of time' with mainly single speaker expression. The present thesis comes to a conclusion that, dividing the source text into different unit (Macro and Micro), is conducive to apply CT+TV strategy; A single film is at first an audiovisual whole, its different channels the branches; A general adaption strategy (TV) and overall transferring strategy (CT) are applied in subtitling.
