With the abolition of the imperial examination and the impact of western culture at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,the Chinese traditional gentry have been replaced by the modern intellectuals,who have played a practical part in the aspect of various transition in knowledge structure,activity space as well as the profession.Meanwhile,they have inherited the ancient ones' responsibility on their country and people,with the ambition of changing political confusion and building ideal society,for which they have taken an active part in social politics.When the realistic politics has deviated from the intellectuals' moral standard and value criterion,some modern intellectuals have chosen to stand fast at one's own heart and pursue,keep one's own independence.But being unable to break through political fetters of power,they have fallen into the nervous heart from choosing their value criterion or the political power finally.Zhou Binglin is such a representative modern intellectual.This paper is mainly launched around his political activitives and the heart contradiction as political choices.Zhou Binglin,who comes from the traditional society,is closely linked with the society and politics under the realistic background with serious facts both domestically and abroad.However he could stick to the political belief in the politics.This thesis is divided into five chapters,dividing Zhou Binglin's life into five continuous periods and describing respectively.Chapter One mainly has introduced Teenagers' experience through which he has grown up from traditional learner indoor reading to a leader of student movement in "May 4th" period.Especially,he had taken an active part in propaganda of socialism during studying in Peking University.The second and third passage focuses on his social activitives and political choice after studying in Europe and America.He was joined the Kuomintang by Li Dazhao's introduction in 1925,giving up the duty of teaching in the university.He went down southern in Guangzhou and participated in the revolution.He began to follow the Kuomintang and its government,successively served as the secretary of the K.M.T Central Committee and the minister of the Organization department in Zhe Jiang Province.He edited the "Central Daily" and joined the government as some certain position.Chapter Four has mainly described such a mental process that Zhou Binglin and the Kuomintang go far gradually.Due to the long-standing problems and rigid and autocratic inclination in the Kuomintang,Zhou BingLin had suspected on its revolutionary and democracy aim gradually.After the Nationalist Government insisted on opening the false national assembly and passing the false constitution,he was desperately disappointed to the Kuomingtang.In 1947 Mr Zhou has participated in the weekly magazine of"New Load "as the hopeless of organizating the other party. He attempted to take the middle road line.Chapter Five introduces his psychological experience in determining to stay in the mainland and receiving the ideology rebuilding after the Kuomingtang had withdrawn to Taiwan.After the civil war broke out,he was devoted to the propaganda of the anti-civil-war and union regime.When Bei Ping was enclosed by PEA in 1949,he facilitated the peace by Fu Zuoyi,a high-ranking military officer of the Kuomingtang.He chosed to stay in the mainland, but he couldn't escape the destiny of the thought was transformed,puzzled and helpless in his declining years.I make an exhaustive exposition in political activitives and choices of Zhou Binglin,and analyze his inner transformation and nervous in the political activitives. It also embodies his personality and spiritual of this modern intellectual,which is the tense soul under the conflict of value standard and political power.
