Li Yu, one of the most popular writers in period of late Ming to early Qing dynasty. The American scholars have achieved a lot in the field of the all-round study of Li Yu with their original perspectives. Therefore, to study what the American scholars have achieved is benefit to a new and thorough understanding of Li Yu and also helpful to inspirit the Chinese scholars. This dissertation is based on a lot of work in collecting and translating the first-hand materials about the American studies in Li Yu, and it includes three parts which are Li Yu's life, Li Yu's stories and Li Yu's plays. Among the various study achievements from the American scholars, this dissertation chose Chun-Shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-Lun Chang, Patrick Hanan, and Eric P. Henry to research. Chun-Shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-Lun Chang replace the literary method which was traditionally used in the study of Li Yu and his works with a cross-discipline perspective to probe into the interactive relationship between Li Yu and his times. Patrick Hanna's study centers in the invention in all Li Yu's life and his works which result in the original, individualism characteristics in his life philosophy, short stories and plays. Eric P. Henry's study concentrate on Li Yu's play in a method of text research, illustrated the comedy with a strong features of Li Yu, the sprite of comedy and the exceeding of the Chinese traditional plays. There is already some translation and instruction of Patrick Hannan and Eric P. Henry's study of Li Yu in china, however, this dissertation is dedicated in an all-round instruction of their study. As to the translation and instruction of Chun-Shu Chang and Shelley Hsueh-Lun Chang may be the fist time in china which results in its value of materials.
