Approximately 80 percent of the world's population is reported to be able to read basically. Besides their native language, some of these readers are also able to read, at various levels, in one or more additional languages. As we enter a new century, people will require even stronger literacy abilities in increasingly larger number of social settings. With the widespread use of English in the world, as an access to get information, work and study, English reading has been much emphasized. To enhance the reading ability is one of the aims of the college English teaching and learning in China. Only with relatively strong ability in reading may students able to use English language as a tool to acquire their professional information. Thus how to efficiently teach English reading has always been concerned of both teachers and students. However, the outcome of present English reading teaching in China is far from satisfactory. The reasons may be multidimensional, but obviously, the reform of English teaching is imperative. In recent years, many education authorities recommend the task-based approach—a new language teaching method, TBLT, which emphasized"leaning in doing". The task-based language teaching breaks the traditional model, pays attention to students' cultivation of the ability and strategy in carrying out the task, and the ability in taking part in group activities. Nowadays, TBLT is popular in elementary and middle school in China. But the positive effect of it in college English teaching, especially in college English reading teaching, is not obvious and many problems still exist.By probing into the application of task-based language teaching in college English reading, the paper tends to explore some practical problems existing in the multi-ethnic region and tries to find some effective solutions. The students in the experiments are English major from Xinjiang Universities of Finance and Economics. Two classes are completely minority students who have never learned English and Chinese before university and are principally required to pass Band Four, even TEM Four after four- year English learning. The study aims to explore a practical and effective method to help improving the reading teaching for minority college students in Xinjiang.
