The archaeological culture is usually referred to as'the visible groups of remains in the digging discoveries, which represent ancient people sharing the same areas, the same times, and the same cultural features'. The archaeological culture is the foundation of Archaeology as well as its subject. So it is of great importance to tell from each other and exactly define one of them, which not only contains issues in reality but also needs support in theory. Professor Lin once generalized about four methods used in Chinese digging practice, on his academic paper < the Retrospect and Prospect of the archaeological culture >, to tell different archaeological cultures. According to his words, different cultures can be distinguished by prominent traits, similarities on the whole, groups of characters shared by the ancients or parallel sequences. Based on the experience and fruits from our predecessors, this thesis——taking the example of Santang culture,to define such historical cultural mixture existing in certain areas and times——makes progress in study, which would be in the hope of contributing to academic studies. This thesis is characterized by chaper bodies that comprise six parts, of which every part is relatively independent unit often followed by a small conclusion in large one. They are combined together through the main denotations in Santang culture. For the first part, the research status about archaeological cultures and the importance of Santang culture are described as the preface. For the second one, it's about the study level of Santang culture and handicaps in this project. Both the third and the fourth parts, as the main body of the paper, take up some two-thirds of space at large, which define the concept of Santang culture by both groups and cultural traditions, namely qualities and quantities or sections and profiles. Subsequently, it comes to the generality that summarizes scopes of distribution and spread and relationship with other cultures around. The fifth part introduces some academic points of view tracing its sources and looking for its origins. And in the last part, some thought-provoking questions are posed to deepen our general impression of and prompt us to further thinking about it. Taking Santang culture for example, this thesis primarily focuses on issues in theoretical and realistic situations. Meanwhile, some other relevant questions are also involved in and simply narrated in this paper. To sum up, owing to limits of resources unearthed in diggings and academic level and capability in myself, there must be some omissions and improper places. I do apologize for my such carelessness and inconvenience I bring about, but sincerely hope that considerations and corrections can be given, which are always my pleasures.
