Su Tong, an outstanding writer in contemporary Chinese literature, not only enriches the creativity of Avant Garde and New History, but in a unique way, pays close attention to a special group, the youth. This paper, which develops from the following four aspects: characters, thymes, mental types and the cultural causes of the mental world, focuses on a comprehensive and deep analysis of the mental world with its cultural causes of his novels for the youth. Its characters include children such as Changing of the Youth, Memory in a Mulberry Field and Xiangchunshu Street, the youth from both the city and the countryside, and the youth in love. The thymes mainly consists of being restless and stray, returning hometown and escaping, fate and absurdity. The mental types are made up of the following: rebellion, anxiety, coolness; fear, disorientation, solitude; degeneration, numbness, despair. The cultural causes lie in four aspects: experiences in his childhood, cultural similarities in both the city and the countryside, his reading experiences and the influences of contemporary western culture.This paper presents a comprehensive and systematic analysis of Su Tong's novels for the youth. Based on a careful reading of his novels and the weakness of the previous study, this paper displays introspection of the unique world of the youth with the writer's careful thought of the mental world of the youth. Targeting the characters and mental world of his novels, this paper bases on the understanding of psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung to analyze the mental world of the youth with its causes, ranging from the writer's life experience, cultural differences between the city and the countryside, reading experience to the Ultimate Care of the youth and human beings.
